The TV series Business Proposal is a classic example of the elements of a show being bigger than the whole. There is seldom a single episode in this Netflix original comedy that does not have some hilarious antics or a surprising plot twist.

The romantic K-drama provides much amusement and light-hearted humour, but it falls short of providing a unified plot arc and a convincing relationship. Business Proposal is based on the webtoon of the same name (also known as “The Office Blind Date”).

It depicts the lives and love misadventures of GOFood researcher Shin Ha-ri, who works in the food industry (Kim Se-Jeong). When Ha-ri goes on a blind date in place of her best friend Jin Young-SEO (Seol In-ah), she is astonished to find herself face-to-face with Kang Tae-moo, the CEO of GOFood, whom she had never met before (Ahn Hyo-seop).

Tae-moo and Ha-ri/Geum-hui commit to a fictitious relationship to placate Tae-meddling moo’s grandpa, GOFood Chairman Kang Da-goo. He has been interfering in family affairs (Lee Deok-Hwa). What starts as small-scale deceit soon grows into a big and entangled web of secrets and deep sentiments that neither Ha-ri nor Tae-moo are willing to confess to themselves or others.

Business Proposal drama is strengthened by a cast of endearing and likeable characters. The connection between Kim and Ahn is one thing, but the whole ensemble works together beautifully.

Plot

Shin Ha-ri (Kim Se-Jeong, The Uncanny Counter) agrees to go on a blind date to assist her closest friend, chaebol daughter Jin Young-SEO (Kim Se-Jeong, The Uncanny Counter), frighten away the suitors her father wants her to marry.

However, she is completely unaware that the man who will be seated across the table from her on a blind date is none other than Kang Tae-moo (Ahn Hyo-seop, Lovers Of The Red Sky), the new workaholic CEO of the firm for which she is responsible.

Cha Sung-hoon, the handsome secretary of Tae-moo, comes across Young-SEO, who falls head over heels in love with him at first sight while shopping at a convenience store. It’s a scenario with all the makings of a great romantic comedy.

Final Verdict

Based on a webtoon known as The Office Blind Date, Business Proposal seems to have that type of atmosphere, with difficulties and convolutions aplenty and characters only loosely based on real-life individuals.

The way you react to misconceptions and issues will significantly impact your pleasure in the series. Even though Ha-ri wants her buddy Young-seo to get her out of this issue, she finds herself getting further and deeper into it the more she encounters Tae-mu, posing as a crazed version of Young-SEO.

She has run into him at the workplace many times, and her product study has captured his interest so far.
